CIKS Technology Resource Centre. Sukkankollai.

We have constructed a training centre at our farm in Sukkankollai with facilities to impart multimedia enhanced classroom training, as well as on-farm demonstrations on organic farming. The first residential training programme for 20 participants was conducted successfully in July 2007.

Five two-day short term training programmes have been completed for the beneficiaries of Nalleri, Soraputhur Sinnanatham, Rakkampalayam and Thiruvalarcherry. Totally 167 farmers have benefited through these training programmes.

Training programmes that help secure livelihoods.

A rural success story :
TRAINING FOR LIVELIHOOD SECURITY

CIKS has been recognized as the Technology Resource Centre (TRC) by the Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART). With support from CAPART, we have established a modern training centre at Sukkankollai with residential facilities, multimedia capable classrooms, a rural library and facilities for on-farm demonstrations and training. The goal is to enhance the livelihood security of small and marginal farmers by strengthening their capacities for organic farming through a series of intensive training programmes and workshops - the first of which was conducted successfully in July 2007.

HOW FARMERS BENEFIT

  • Their capacities for organic farming are strengthened through the training programmes.
  • Multimedia enhanced classroom sessions make for engaging and effective learning.
  • The demonstration fields and on-farm trainings help them get familiar with a number of techniques and practices in the most effectipicve way.
  • The residential facilities enable us to deliver longer, more intense training programmes of greater value.
  • The rural library provides a valuable resource of books, periodicals and audio-visuals on organic farming.
  • Trainer’s training programmes help us reach a much wider spread of farmers.

Taking it to othe next level:
CHALLENGES BEFORE US

picThe challenge is to strengthen the facilities at the centre, so that we can expand the scope of the training programmes in terms of both quality and quantity -allowing for us to handle a greater annual throughput of participants and greatly improve their overall experience.

THE PLAN

  • picImprovement of the residential facilities, with separate 20 bed dormitories for men and women.
  • Accommodation for resource persons
  • Improved kitchen and dining facilities to enable preparation of a greater variety of food for a greater number of people.
  • Enabling broadband internet access.
  • A wider range of books and audio-visuals for the library.
  • A generator to provide power backup.
  • Ergonomically designed furniture for the classrooms, dormitories and library.
