Organically produced seeds are currently very difficult to get and the chemically treated seeds have to be treated organically and used in organic agriculture. This is becoming a major constraint for organic farmers across the country. Certifying agencies are also imposing stringent regulations and have given deadlines for organic cultivators to look for organically produced seeds.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC SEEDS - FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TAMIL NADU
With years of experience in organic cultivation of paddy, CIKS for the first time in Tamil Nadu has pioneered in the production of organically certified ADT-43 seeds. The breeder seeds have been obtained from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University . Trainings have been provided for the farmers on seed certification procedures by the Government department officials and CIKS has provided technological support for organic cultivation and also for organic certification of the land. Farmers have produced seeds of ADT-43 which are now certified by the seed certification department as F1 seeds. They have also been certified as organic by IMO, an accredited certifying agency of APEDA. For the first time in Tamil Nadu, organically certified ADT-43 seeds have been produced and available for sale. This will be released by the Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,
Dr. P. Murugesa Boopathi on 3 rd March 2010 at TNAU, Coimbatore . This is a joint effort of CIKS and Arogyam Organics Private Limited which will be involved in marketing these seeds. We hope to bring out more varieties for the next season.
